Jennifer Steinkamp is an installation artist who works with video and new media in order to explore ideas about architectural space, motion, and perception. The artist uses digital projection to enliven an architectural space and often collaborates with artists. This piece was made in honor of the courage of Rosa Parks and the civil rights movement that she helped to inspire. Steinkamp is based out of Los Angeles but has roots in Colorado and Minnesota. She earned her BFA and MFA at Art Center and was recognized with an Honorary Doctorate as well. She is a professor at UCLA. Steinkamp has exhibited her lens based works internationally at places like Getty Museum, 11th International Cairo Biennale, Prospect 2 New Orleans, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Minneapolis Institute of Art, American Consulate in Guangzhou, China, and many others. Her works have been collected by both private and public institutions such as Denver Art Museum, Experience Music Project in Seattle, Hammer Museum, the Henry Art Gallery, LACMA, and many more.
