Etched and inspired, a form by Swedish designer, Ingrid Atterberg.
.
Ingrid Atterberg (Swedish 1920-2008) attended Slöjdföreningens skola, today known as a part of HDK-Valand - Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg from 1940–1942. Atterberg ran her own workshop in Gothenburg for a time, and later moved to Uppsala in 1944 where she was a designer for Upsala-Ekeby AB ceramics factory..Responsible for many innovations, she introduced adding manganese oxide to the usual red-coloured clay used at the factory (UEAB) in order to darken the colour. This ‘black clay’ was used widely in the 1950s. Leaving parts unglazed, allowed the darker clay to create a contrast to the white or coloured glazing.
.
Atterberg created several well known classics in ceramic history, series of models such as ‘Grafika’, ‘Negro’, and ‘Mimosa’. Generally asymmetrical shapes with etched, carved, or painted decorations. Seen above is Untitled, (dark gray, white, oval vase with incised decor, from ‘Negro’ series, for Upsala_Ekeby, Sweden), 1953 signed and numbered on the base this earthenware piece stands 9” x 4 1/2”..In 1969 she started her own workshop, her husband, Viking Göransson, as architect for the building, and dog by her side. Atterberg produced works into the 1990s. She died in 2008.
